at Riverside Dental Group will answer some of the most frequently asked questions about orthodontics.
Orthodontic FAQs
Q1. Is it true that braces can help with TMJ?
A1. TMJs (temporomandibular joints) are on either side of your jaw and help you to yawn, chew, open, and close your mouth. The condition that many people call TMJ is actually TMJ disorder (or TMD). It consists of discomfort and sometimes downright pain as a result of misalignment. So, yes, aligning the bite can sometimes help this condition, as well as prevent general wearing down of your teeth. Your Moreno Valley dentists would be able to tell you if your TMD could be helped with orthodontic treatment.
Q2. Are straight teeth healthier teeth?
A2. In fact, yes. Teeth that overlap, are crowded, or crooked are often difficult to keep free of plaque. Crooked teeth provide many hiding places for the bacteria that lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Evenly aligned and spaced out teeth and aligned are easier to keep clean with basic oral hygiene and dental cleanings. Misaligned bites can cause teeth to wear down over time.
Q3. What types of braces are available?
A3. At Riverside Dental Group, we are proud to have several experienced orthodontists and dentists at-the-ready to cater to all of our patient’s unique dental and orthodontic needs. Traditional braces might still be a top choice for some people. For those that are avoiding the metal look of braces, we can consult with you and see if you might make a good candidate for lingual braces, clear ceramic braces, or Invisalign.
Q4. How long will I have to wear braces?
A4. Depending on your straightening needs, most orthodontic procedures can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.
