Traditional Braces

If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your smile, or if you suffer from severe malocclusion, we encourage you to speak with our orthodontist about how braces may improve the way you feel about your appearance, oral health, and daily quality of life.

How Do Braces Work?

This orthodontic system uses tension to reposition the teeth over a period of a year-and-a-half to two years. The Orthodontist will first attach metal brackets to the front of the teeth and connect them with an archwire. Periodically, the wires will be adjusted as the teeth are moved to more optimal placement.

The Benefits of Braces

In addition to creating a more esthetic appearance and a beautiful smile, braces correct a number of functional issues that you may not be aware of. First, misaligned teeth may result in difficulty chewing and poor function, abnormal wear of specific teeth leading to future dental need such as fillings or crowns. Also, it makes thorough brushing and flossing difficult, allowing food to become trapped between teeth. As bacteria feed on the particles, plaque buildup coats the teeth, which can lead to enamel erosion and gum inflammation. Finally, it can place inordinate amounts of stress on one or both jaw joints, leading to difficulty fully opening and closing the mouth (TMJ disorder) or chronic teeth grinding (bruxism). Braces can correct your smile and prevent these oral health concerns.

What Are Esthetic Braces?

Esthetic (clear or gold) braces are designed to function exactly like traditional braces, with brackets and archwires that gradually force misaligned teeth back into position. The only difference is that they’re made from a clear or gold material rather than stainless steel, for improved esthetics. The main benefit of choosing esthetic braces over traditional ones is the improved appearance of the brackets and wires compared to stainless steel.

Who Qualifies for Traditional Braces?

Most patients with teeth alignment issues qualify for metal braces. We will examine your teeth and jaw to decide if you would benefit from traditional orthodontics or alternatives, such as Invisalign®.
