During this time of year, kids are out of our control for several hours each week day. Between school and extracurricular activities, playdates and sports teams, we can’t be certain that our children aren’t being exposed to foods and treats we may not necessarily approve of. Your Moreno Valley family dentists, at Moreno Valley Dental, recognize the importance of children keeping up with their preventive dental care, no matter what time of year it is. Candy is going to happen, but how we take care of our teeth can make the difference between a healthy smile, or tooth decay.
Kids Know the Score
An American Dental Association (ADA) survey (in association with PopCap Games) was given last Halloween. A random sampling of American children from ages 5 to 13 were asked about their views on the holiday. A surprising 65% said that Halloween was their absolute favorite of all celebrations. Luckily, dressing up in costumes was voted to be the best part about Halloween. Unfortunately, candy was still a favorite part of the holiday. A total of 89% of the children questioned claimed that they would still be big fans of October 31st even if candy wasn’t involved. So maybe we should trust our kids a little more.
Dental Checkups for All Ages
This same survey proved that kids get the point when it comes to sugar in relation to their dental and overall health. The number of children that felt concerned about their dental health when consuming sweets was 42%. A large group believed they should cut back on sugar. And as many as 93% of children questioned said they would prefer the gift of a video game over that of sugary treats. No matter what your child’s eating habits, however (and no matter what time of year) keeping up with six month dental checkups and twice daily brushing habits will help ward off cavities.
