Children, like adults, can develop cavities due to poor oral hygiene and a diet high in sugary foods and drinks. Tooth decay can lead to discomfort and a higher risk of infections and other complications. Knowing what to do to avoid tooth decay is important, especially around the holidays when candy and sugary treats become so abundant. Fortunately, we have cavity prevention tips for kids.

Drink More Water

Encourage your children to drink more water! Soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, and even fruit juice all contain high amounts of sugar and/or acids, which weaken tooth enamel and increase the risk of cavities forming. Water contains no sugars, no acids, and helps hydrate the body and keep you healthy. Water also helps rinse way food particles after meals.

Each Healthier Foods

Try to limit how much candy and dessert your children eat. You can also offer them healthy snack alternatives when they’re home from school. Healthy options include fresh fruit, vegetables, low-fat yogurt, and assorted nuts. All of these alternatives contain essential vitamins and nutrients. In addition, rough vegetables, such as carrots and broccoli, can actually help remove plaque from the teeth when consumed.

Brush and Floss Properly

Without exception, your kids need to brush their teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Caring for smiles from home is essential for avoiding tooth decay. For toddlers, you may need to assist them and for elementary aged kids, you should supervise the brushing and flossing process.

Have Your Teeth Cleaned

Every six months you and your little ones should have your teeth cleaned by the dentist. Only a cleaning can completely remove plaque from the teeth. In addition, talk to us about possible preventive treatments, such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants.
