Riverside Dental Group - What to during an emergency

Harming anything in your oral cavity can be very stressful, especially when you do your best to take care of yourself. If you accidentally chip or break a tooth or feel a sudden onset of pain in your mouth, you may be going through a dental emergency. Riverside Dental Group in California is here to tell you what to do when this happens.

Accidents Happen & We’re Here To Help

Accidents cannot always be prevented.  Whether you are playing sports, biting into food, or a cavity turns into something more severe, we’re here to help you. There are many different types of dental trauma – losing or chipping a tooth, toothache, or biting your lip /cheek. The first thing to remember is not to panic. If the injury is life-threatening, call 911. If it is not life-threatening but you are in pain, call your local Riverside Dental Office so that we can see you.

Not treating a dental emergency can lead to severe problems later, so it’s best to take care of it as soon as possible. Our offices offer restorative and prosthetic dental options if you lose a tooth or need emergency removal. We can remove the problem source and replace it with a better structure so that you can carry on with your normal life.

What To Do During An Emergency

A loose or chipped tooth- When this happens, be sure to not mess with it or wiggle it around. This can make the pain worse or exacerbate the problem. Rinse with warm water and try to keep the area clean. Have a friend or family member drive you to the dentist if possible. If this happens after our office hours, we will have directions for you to follow.

Pain in your jaw or mouth out of nowhere- This could be due to an infection, cavity, or TMJ-related problem. It’s important that you come into the office so that we can do a proper examination of the area to diagnose and treat the area.

If you are bleeding due to tooth loss or biting your gum, place gauze in your mouth to limit the amount of blood loss. Do your best to keep the pieces or the whole tooth with you in a zip-lock bag. If you have accidentally bitten your cheek or tongue, rinse with water and do your best to avoid touching the area.
