The Causes and Warning Signs of Gum Disease

Factors like poor brushing and flossing habits, combined with a diet high in sugar and starch, can create plaque and tartar buildup. These layers then irritate and inflames the gum tissues, which leads to soreness, redness, and even bleeding. Without treatment to reverse the inflammation, also known as gingivitis, pockets could form at the gum line as tissues pull away from the teeth. When disease-causing bacteria enter these pockets, this can lead to periodontal disease. Along with the symptoms we discussed above, you could experience swelling or even recession, which makes teeth appear longer. Lack of treatment could lead to issues like tooth loss!

Deep Cleanings

A deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing, could help manage the issue and protect you from the later stages linked to missing teeth. The process involves using the same tools as a traditional cleaning, namely the ultrasonic scaling device and manual pick. However, instead of just removing buildup from the teeth, we also remove it from the exposed roots and from beneath the gum line. The process also helps destroy pockets of harmful bacteria. This could take one visit or as many as four, depending on the severity of your buildup. Since this is more involved than a traditional cleaning, we may numb your smile ahead of time. Once the procedure ends, we will polish your teeth to help limit future buildup and also brighten your smile.

Managing Your Gum Health

Moving forward, we can help manage the issue with a traditional cleaning every three to four months, as well as better homecare habits, like daily brushing and flossing.
