riverside dental emergencyDental emergencies, such as cracked or chipped teeth or even knocked-out teeth, need to be addressed right away. You should call us immediately, and then take actions to ease your discomfort. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team explains how to address your dental emergency and schedule an appointment with our team.

Common Examples of Dental Emergencies

What constitutes a dental emergency? This refers to any injury or sudden pain in your teeth or gums. If the issue is potentially life-threatening, you need to proceed to the nearest emergency room or call 911. Otherwise, you should call our office. Even if the injury occurs outside of normal business hours, call us and we will reach out with a time to see you for treatment. Remember, a damaged tooth is one that is vulnerable to tooth decay or infection, so we want you to contact us right away so we can see you and repair your tooth!

How We Recommend Responding

First, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a piece of cloth or gauze to control any bleeding. You can also employ a cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face to control facial swelling. If a tooth is chipped, see if you can recover any pieces to bring with you. If this isn’t possible, we can still repair the tooth. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If a tooth is knocked out completely, only pick it up by the crown, never the root, and rinse it under gently running water. You want to remove foreign debris, but not any tissues. Then place it in a glass of milk or salt water and bring it with you.

Repairing Your Tooth

Our team has a number of options for repairing teeth following dental emergencies. For example, with dental bonding we can correct minor damage in only one visit. We also have custom crowns that can take on more substantial breakage or fractures. Our team could also discuss custom mouthguards to better protect smiles from dental emergencies. If you have any questions about our approach to emergency dentistry, then contact our team today.
