Tooth decay can impact smiles of all ages in childhood, and could be a source of discomfort and even premature tooth loss. But with children’s dentistry, our team can offer preventive treatments to keep tooth decay at bay. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about children’s dentistry and cavity prevention.
Your Child’s First Checkup and Cleaning
When your little one’s first baby tooth erupts, usually around age one, we want to see them for an initial exam. This visit usually involves no treatment, just a simple knee-to-knee lap exam to make sure teeth are erupting properly. Once your little one reaches age two, checkups and cleanings should be happening every six months, just as they do for adults. During these visits, we will talk to your child about his or her oral hygiene habits, and discuss ways to keep smiles strong. We also examine the smile for signs of trouble, and can create a treatment plan to take on issues like tooth decay. In the same visit, we help fight issues like tooth decay and gingivitis with a cleaning, a procedure that removes all harmful layers of plaque and tartar in a few minutes. But we also have treatments that are designed solely to fight tooth decay.
Fluoride and Dental Sealants
With fluoride treatments, we will apply fluoride directly to the teeth during your checkup. We apply this in a varnish form, coating the teeth to keep enamel strong and reduce the risk of erosion and cavities. The application takes only a few seconds and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour.
Since kids often have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss, we can coat the molars in dental sealants, a special acrylic coating that keeps food and drink particles from being caught between the teeth. This helps lower the risk of cavities, and the sealants can stay in place for up to ten years!
Help for Kids with Special Needs
If your child has sensory issues or medical complications that make undergoing dental care difficult, then let us know. We have a calm and friendly staff who know how to work with kids who have special needs, so they have a positive experience in the office.
