How do you feel about visiting the dentist? We know that some people have dental anxiety, and we understand this fear is very real. We won’t downplay your discomfort, and instead want to offer a calming solution so even those with anxiety can enjoy their time in the office. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about oral conscious sedation.
When a Patient Needs Sedation
When do we recommend a calming medication for our patients? Like we mentioned above, when people have dental anxiety, this fear is very real and can prevent them from seeking treatment for aching teeth or bleeding gums, allowing their oral health to worsen and the risk of tooth loss to increase. With sedation, we can offer a solution that helps them enter a deep state of calm, with little to no memory of the procedure at all. This is also helpful for people with special needs or for those undergoing more extensive treatments, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement.
Choosing the Right One for You
How do we decide if sedation is right for you, and how do we choose the right solution? Our team will look at your anxiety levels and the type of procedure you need to undergo. Our team also looks at your age, weight, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking. With this information, we can select the right calming medication for you!
Oral Conscious Sedation
Often, we opt for oral conscious sedation. Deeper than nitrous oxide, and not as serious as IV, this can help you reach a state of calm and relaxation, with little memory of the procedure, even though you remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist as needed. We administer this in a pill or liquid form before the procedure begins. We may suggest avoiding food and drink for the hours before the procedure, and often schedule these treatments for the early morning.
The effects take time to wear off, so you will need to have someone on hand to take you home. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions as needed, as well as prescriptions for medications to help facilitate a comfortable healing process.
