riverside periodontal therapyOur gums are a vital part of our smile. They frame the teeth and also help secure them. Which means disease that targets the gums requires immediate attention! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we provide better gum health with periodontal therapy.

The Factors Behind Gum Disease

What causes periodontal disease? The trouble starts when your gums become inflamed, also referred to as gingivitis. When this happens and you don’t receive treatment to reverse it, then the gums can pull away from the teeth to form pockets for disease-causing bacteria to enter, leading to the onset of periodontal disease. Factors behind the initial inflammation include a diet high in sugar and starch, poor brushing and flossing habits, lack of professional cleanings every six months, and a family history of the disease. Other factors could include inflammatory illness and the use of certain medications.

When to Seek Periodontal Therapy

You need to seek treatment at the first signs of trouble, because otherwise the disease will grow in severity with time, and could eventually reach a stage known as periodontitis. At this stage, the tissues connecting your teeth and gums will erode, leading to adult to tooth loss. Warning signs could include sore and red gums, bleeding when you brush and floss, and swelling. You could also develop gum recession, in which the gums pull back and expose portions of the roots, which cause tooth sensitivity, an increased risk of cavities, and could lead to teeth appearing long and uneven.

Deep Cleanings and More

Often, we will start with a deep cleaning. Also known as scaling a root planing, this involves our team removing plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and the exposed roots. The procedure could take one visit or as many as four, depending on the severity of your buildup. We then polish the teeth and offer routine cleanings every three to four months to manage buildup and control the disease. We could also discuss treatment with laser dentistry for more advanced cases.
