Do you have a gap in your smile due to a lost tooth, or a larger gap of up to three missing teeth in a row? If so, you need a prosthetic and we can offer this with a custom dental bridge. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we complete smiles with our lifelike and custom dental bridges.
The Dangers of Losing a Tooth
Losing your teeth is a recipe for disaster. Missing teeth could lead to teeth drifting to cause misalignment due to the gap in your smile. You could develop issues eating your favorite meals, and clear speech could be difficult. As your jaw weakens due to missing teeth, this could increase the risk of further tooth loss. Finally, you will likely feel uncomfortable with your appearance due to the gaps in your smile and this could impact your social life. But we can help by filling the gap in your smile with a dental bridge.
The Process of Creating a Bridge
The dental bridge is a prosthetic that fills the gap in your smile for people with a single missing tooth or as many as three or four in a row. There are multiple versions. The most common involves removing structure from the abutment teeth, the ones on each side of the gap, and then taking images and impressions, which we use to create your prosthetic. The final product contains new teeth with crowns on each side. Made from ceramic, this can be color matched to blend with your smile and will be able to handle daily bite forces with ease.
Placing Your New Prosthetic
With a traditional dental prosthetic, we will attach the crown portions to the abutment teeth to support the new teeth. With a Maryland option, the new tooth will contain a metal backing that is attached to the rear facing side of the surrounding teeth. To preserve your jawbone and provide an option that can last for decades, we could insert one or two dental implants and attach the crown portions to these.
