Pediatric dentistry can help kids of all ages in our community enjoy better oral health. In particular, we have two treatments that can help lower the risk of tooth decay! Your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how fluoride and dental sealants help prevent cavities in little smiles.

How Cavities Form in Little Smiles

Children tend to have a high risk of cavities for a number of reasons. For example, many have trouble brushing and flossing their teeth thoroughly, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. Kids also tend to overindulge in sugary treats, which leaves behind particles for bacteria to consume, which creates the plaque buildup that weakens and erodes enamel to make cavities possible. For young children, napping or going to bed with a bottle or sippy cup of milk or ice could increase the risk of tooth decay even in babies and toddlers. In addition to cleanings and better oral hygiene routines, we can also discuss preventing tooth decay with treatments like dental sealants and fluoride.

Dental Sealants

Often, younger kids have trouble reaching the molars when they brush and floss, which allows food and drink particles to be trapped between these rear teeth. The risk of cavities increases in this area. But with dental sealants, we will apply a thin layer of acrylic to the molars, which coats them and prevents food and drink particles from becoming trapped where kids cannot reach them. Applying them only takes seconds and kids just need to avoid food and drink for around 30 minutes as the material cures. The sealants can stay in place for years to come, as long as ten in some cases. They wear away gradually with time, and if necessary, we can always re-apply.

Fluoride Treatments

During your child’s checkup and cleaning visit, we can apply fluoride to the teeth, brushing it in a varnish form. This coats them and strengthens the enamel, even weakened portions, to make cavities less likely. The application process only takes a few seconds and as with sealants, they just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour.
