We always strive to ensure each and every patient who sees us enjoy a positive experience in the office, even if they have real anxiety about visiting the dentist. To do so, we can provide three different dental sedation selections. In today’s blog, Riverside Dental Group talks about oral conscious sedation and more!
The Situations That Require Dental Sedation
When do you need sedation? For some patients, we may recommend this if they are undergoing a more extensive treatment, such as dental implant placement or wisdom tooth extraction. If you have anxiety, this could ease your dental fears and allow you to enjoy a positive experience in our office. Likewise, this can help kids and adults with special needs that makes undergoing care a more difficult process. But how do we choose from our three calming options? Which one is right for you?
Choosing Which is Right for You
Our team will take several factors into account when we choose dental sedation for our patients. For example, we will look at your age, weight, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking. We also assess your anxiety levels and look into other activities that could complicate your ability to undergo care. From there, we can choose from three different options to help you enjoy a calm time in the office!
Three Sedation Options
The most common (and mild) form is nitrous oxide, given via a mask over the nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm, with little memory of the process, despite staying conscious. The effects end when the procedure does, so you can return home or even drive yourself back to work or school.
If you need a deeper form of calm, then we could offer oral conscious, taken in a pill or liquid form prior to the procedure. You enter a deeper state of calm, staying conscious but having no memory of the process at all. The effects take time to wear off, so be sure you have someone on hand to take you home.
The deepest form of calming is IV, which puts you in a sleep-like state with no memory at all!
