woodcrest cleaningOver time, various factors could allow plaque and tartar to coat teeth and lead to poor oral health, including tooth decay and even gum disease. Which is why to protect your smile, we need to remove these layers on a regular basis. In today’s blog, your team at Riverside Dental Group talks about removing plaque and tartar with a routine dental cleaning.

Plaque and Tartar Buildup

Over time, harmful bacteria in our mouths will break down and consume the particles of sugar and starch left behind by the foods and drinks we consume. This is especially likely if we don’t brush and floss properly, leaving these particles behind. As this happens, oral acidity levels rise and the teeth become coated in a sticky layer of plaque, which hardens with time into tartar. The buildup cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone, and staying in place means weakened enamel and a higher risk of tooth decay and infection. The same buildup is also responsible for a higher risk of cavities and gum disease, and bad breath and teeth stains too! Which is why you need a cleaning every six months to remove the buildup.

Routine Cleanings

Buildup strong enough to cause cavities and gum disease does not form overnight, so seeing our team for a routine cleaning every six months is a chance to regularly remove these layers and polish the teeth to keep your smile healthy and strong. The process only takes a few minutes and is conducted as part of your routine checkup visit. With an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool, we will gently and thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar. We then polish the teeth for a brighter appearance, and to limit the ability for buildup to occur before you see us again in six months!

Scaling And Root Planings

If you already have gingivitis or gum disease, we may instead recommend a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing. We use the same tools, but remove layers from the roots as well. This is more involved, so we may numb your smile and this could take more than one sitting. We then use traditional cleaning every three to four months to keep buildup under control and disease in-check.
