With so many restorative dental treatments out there, it can be difficult to navigate which one is best suited to your needs. At Riverside Dental Group of California, we’re here to help educate our patients so that they can have a healthy smile again. In today’s blog, we’re here to tell you about inlays and onlays, and how they differ from traditional crowns.
Inlays & Onlays Offer Custom Restoration Options
If you have ever damaged a tooth, gotten a dental implant, or have had root canal treatment, you may be familiar with getting a dental crown placed on the salvaged tooth. This structure is used to act like a cover over the tooth that has been saved so that it will not be harmed again in the future. A dental crown covers the whole structure and allows for function and appearance to be improved.
We also offer inlays and onlays, which are like getting a crown, but offer a different style depending on your unique needs.
An inlay could be closely compared to a filling. If you have a tooth that is causing you problems but does not have enough support to hold a traditional filling, the dentist may decide that an inlay is the best solution for you. One of the advantages of this solution is that there is no need to extract the tooth. It can be restored and regain its normal function with this solution.
We also have onlays, which are known as partial crowns. Instead of covering your entire tooth, the onlay will cover only the necessary part. Typically, these cover the cusps- the elevated part- of your tooth if they undergo damage.
Prevent Further Damage To Your Smile With These Options
Crowns, inlays, and onlays are usually not the first solution that the dentist will add to your treatment plan, but if a problem is allowed to continue without being stopped, then these would be the next best option.
Preventive care is the best solution for almost all oral health-related problems, as brushing and flossing can prevent cavities that grow in your mouth and cause decay in your teeth. A filling can stop the spread of a cavity, but if the filling is not done in time or comes out, then the cavity can worsen.
