In our last blog, we talked about how you can build good habits in the New Year. However, we know that accidents can happen before then. Your Riverside Dental Group in California is here to help you during an emergency. Today, we are here to tell you what to do if you have a tooth-related emergency during the holidays or any other time.
The Most Common Accidents
Even with the best prevention, injuries can still happen. Some of the most common problems that occur during the holiday season include knocking out a tooth when playing games, a tooth infection that causes toothache, cracking a tooth, or losing a prosthetic or orthodontic appliance. In the moment, this can be stressful to deal with. However, you do not have to worry because we can help.
Preventing Emergencies
We know that accidents happen, but here are a few tips on avoiding them when possible.
- Wear A Mouthguard. If you like to play sports or other games that involve physical contact, this can protect your teeth from being loosened or knocked out. This will help when your family plays a game of football or hockey on Christmas day.
- Treat Cavities On Time. Ignoring tooth decay can lead to infection and toothache. A filling can help remove a cavity and stop it from causing more damage. If the damage is more severe, a root canal can also help.
- Avoid Hard Foods. When you have a crown, prosthetic tooth, or wear braces, it is important to be careful about the foods you eat. Your dental appliance should be able to withstand a lot of pressure, but it cannot stand against all things. Be sure to avoid food like bone-in meat, sticky candies, or other hard foods.
What To Do If You Harm Your Tooth
Dental emergencies can be stressful especially when you do your best to care for your smile. Remember to remain calm so that you can call your dentist. Most dental emergencies are not life-threatening, but they should be looked at as soon as possible to assess the damage.
Call your dentist to schedule an appointment. If we are not open, we will give you instructions on how to take care of the damage until we can see you. Do your best to keep the tooth or broken piece in a clean Ziplock bag if you are able.
At your appointment, we will take a look at the problem and determine the best treatment plan.
