Did you know that orthodontic treatment is not just reserved for teens and adults? To help tackle the issue early, we can offer phase one orthodontics, also known as interceptive orthodontics. These can help kids as young as age seven! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about orthodontic treatment for kids.
The Need to Guide Smile Growth
For young children, dental misalignment can develop when baby teeth do not fall out on time, which alters how your permanent teeth erupt, creating dental misalignment. Factors such as complications with jaw growth could also lead to issues with alignment. Once your child is seven, there is a mix of primary and permanent teeth, so we can better assess the risk of discomfort and find out if kids benefit from phase one orthodontics. If so, then our team will create a treatment plan designed to help guide smile growth and allow the risk of misalignment to lower, so they need less time with braces or aligners in their teen years.
A Look at Our Interceptive Orthodontics
If a baby tooth has been lost prematurely, this could cause teeth to shift and impact how permanent teeth erupt, creating uneven smiles. But with a space maintainer, we can offer a fixed orthodontic that keeps the space open and allows the permanent teeth to erupt without complication. We also have custom retainers, which can be fixed in place or removable, and which helps guide smile growth to make sure your child’s smile can accommodate the teeth, helping limit the severity of misalignment concerns.
What Happens Next?
Following their phase one treatment, we want all the permanent teeth to erupt and their surfaces to properly calcify before we move on with the next phase. When they reach their teen years, we can continue treatment, using traditional or esthetic braces for more severe cases, or we could provide Invisalign® clear aligners for more minor cases, so kids can obtain even smiles. When this phase of treatment ends, the treatments may return to ensure teeth stay even while the jaw reforms around the new positions of their teeth!
