When was the last time you sat down for a dental cleaning? We want people of all ages to receive one every six months, which protects smiles from decay and disease. In today’s blog, your team at Riverside Dental Group talks about keeping smiles clean over the summer!
The Onset of Plaque and Tartar Buildup
Over time, harmful oral bacteria in our smiles will break down and consume the particles of sugar and starch left behind by the foods and drinks we consume. When this happens, a sticky layer of plaque will coat the teeth, and then harden with time into tartar. The buildup cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone, and if left alone, this could cause teeth stains, bad breath, and even the onset of tooth decay, infection, gingivitis, and gum disease. To avoid threats to the comfort and stability of your smile, you need to have these layers completely removed every few months with a dental cleaning.
Dental Cleanings
The procedure involves our team gently and thoroughly removing all plaque and tartar from the smile, a process that only takes a few minutes but protects your smile for months to come. With an ultrasonic scaling device, gentle vibrations will be used to break up and remove plaque and tartar from the smile. We then follow this with a manual pick to remove any stubborn portions of tartar clinging to the teeth. The last step is to polish the teeth, which not only brightens your smile, but makes it more difficult for plaque and tartar buildup to accumulate before we see you again in six months.
Deep Cleanings
If we find you have gingivitis or the early stages of gum disease, then we could help with a deep cleaning. Also known as a scaling and root planing, this uses the same tools but we also remove buildup from the roots and from under the gums too. Typically, we follow this with a traditional visit every three to four months instead of every six. If you have any questions about how we protect your smile by removing all plaque and tartar, then contact our team, or better yet, schedule your next visit today!
