Reasons for Endodontics

A common name for endodontic treatment is root canal therapy, but you may hear this procedure more often referred to as “root canals.” The intention of endodontics is to save as much of your natural tooth as possible. In fact, in cases of an accidentally knocked out tooth, root canal procedures will sometimes allow reattachment of teeth.

Some of the most common causes for endodontic therapy include:

  • Deep oral infections (tooth decay)
  • Failed fillings which have allowed further infection
  • Traumatic dental injuries
  • Extractions or lost teeth

Endodontic Procedures

Root canal therapy starts with complete x-rays of your teeth and a thorough pre-treatment examination. Our goal is to make sure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. For this reason, we will apply a local anesthetic to the area that we’ll be working on. The endodontist uses a protective rubber sheet to ensure the surgical area is shielded from excess saliva and potential bacterial exposure.

Once you are numb, an opening is made on the surface of the infected tooth for easy removal of infected tissues. The space is sanitized and then filled with a biocompatible material that is similar to rubber. Biocompatible dental cement is applied to the top part of the remaining tooth structure. This ensures that your root canals are completely sealed from further infection. A temporary filling or crown may be placed to restore functionality to your tooth while you heal. Eventually, a customized permanent crown is affixed to the tooth in question.
