The Moreno Valley dentists at Moreno Valley Dental know the deep feelings many of our patients have for their pets. Animals obviously don’t receive the same type of preventive dental care which humans do, but there is some evidence that fluoridated water may help cats have healthier teeth. You can ask your vet about fluoride supplements, but dogs should not have additional fluoride, as they do not process it in the same way. What about the dental health of other animals?
A Snail of a Tale
The average human mouth holds up to 32 teeth. When wisdom teeth erupt, they often crowd surrounding teeth or become impacted. Also known as third molars, wisdom teeth come in behind your two back molars on the top and bottom of your smile. It is very common for wisdom teeth to require extraction in order for the rest of your 28 teeth to properly fit in your mouth. Snails must be wiser than we’d imagine, because they actually have up to 25,000 teeth. Armadillos average 104 teeth in their mouths. Sharks have as many as 50,000, and if they lose one while hunting, they can regenerate another tooth quickly.
Animal Dental Symbiosis
Crocodile birds have a fascinating diet. They are small and fearless, hopping right into the mouths of crocodiles. The crocodiles seem to understand that it is not in their best interest to chomp down and swallow their feathery friends. You see, crocodile birds actually remove food debris, bacteria, and parasites from crocodile’s oral cavities. We’re lucky we don’t have to turn to birds for good oral hygiene. Stick to brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist every six month for a cleaning, and your mouth will be as clean as a crocodiles. (Well, probably cleaner).
