You’ve probably heard about the importance of regular checkups and cleanings from a young age. Why do we need checkups and cleanings? Even as adults, you need to have your teeth regularly cleaned and examined to avoid serious oral health issues. We can help you maintain a healthy and attractive smile with routine preventive care.
Dental Checkups
According to the American Dental Association you should have your teeth examined once every six months. The checkup is simply the doctor looking at your teeth and gums for signs of any possible oral health problems. We can even perform x-rays to obtain a clear picture of your oral health beneath the gums. If we discover any warning signs of potential problems, we can discuss possible treatment options. Children should have checkups as well, since regular visits not only identify possible problems but can also actually ease dental anxiety.
Dental Cleanings
In addition to a checkup you should have a dental cleaning twice a year as well. A cleaning involves either the doctor or the hygienist removing the plaque from the teeth, using either manual tools or an ultrasonic scaling. Removing plaque freshens the breath, brightens the teeth, and can even reduce the risk of gum disease. If you have a high risk of developing periodontal disease then we may suggest a more frequent cleaning, such as once every three to four months. If you need to schedule an exam then please contact our office today.
Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
During an exam we may prescribe a preventive treatment to strengthen the teeth against tooth decay. We primarily suggest these options for children, who often have difficult brushing properly or reaching the molars in the rear of the mouth. With dental sealants, we place a safe plastic coating onto the back teeth so food can’t become stuck between teeth. With a fluoride treatment we apply a special varnish to strengthen the outer enamel.
