First, we always recommend that you schedule an appointment with us if you are uncertain about your oral health, so we may answer your questions in person. For now, however, we hope you will look over some helpful questions and answers that commonly come up during consultations with patients.

Questions and Answers: Wisdom Tooth Removal

Question: Why do you offer wisdom tooth removal? Do a lot of people need these teeth extracted?

Answer: We offer this service because removal of these teeth is quite common. Millions of people require their third molars removed on an annual basis with the statistics shaking out to approximately 9 out of 10 individuals needing at least one tooth extracted.

Question: Why do these teeth have these special nicknames?

Answer: First, the term “wisdom tooth” applies to the fact that these molars grow in during your late teen years or the beginning of your twenties, when you have gathered a greater amount of wisdom. The term “third molars” refers to the fact that this is the third set of molars to develop in your smile.

Question: Why do you suggest wisdom tooth removal? Aren’t third molars just like the rest of my teeth?

Answer: We suggest extractions for a couple different reasons. First, we suggest removal if your wisdom teeth develop in a way that threatens your oral health. This might include impacted teeth that fail to erupt or molars that develop sideways, threatening neighboring teeth. Second, if your teeth develop correctly but you have difficulty cleaning them (because accessing them is a challenge) removal may become necessary.
