Are you worrying about what it’s going to be like to make it through the holiday season with braces on your teeth? Perhaps you’re not worried at all! In either case, it’s quite important that you take some time to review a few very important tips that will allow you to enjoy yourself without sacrificing the well-being of your orthodontic treatment. Have questions? Feel free to give us a call. In the meantime, use your best judgment to make good choices.
Tip #1: Now Isn’t The Time To “Test Their Strength”
You might occasionally have the urge to bite into something that seems a little bit too hard because you wonder if your braces can handle it. While we never suggest this, we definitely recommend against it throughout the holidays. The last thing you want to deal with is a broken bracket or wire (and the need to stop what you’re doing to schedule a time for emergency care).
Tip #2: Cut Everything Into Pieces First
An easy tip that will help you get through the holidays without food stuck between your brackets (it helps throughout the rest of the year, too) is to cut your food into pieces. Attempting to bite into a brownie, eat corn on the cob, chomp into a turkey leg, or otherwise will not go well. Do yourself a favor and get in the habit of prepping your food, so you can eat bite-size pieces with a fork.
Tip #3: Remember: You Can Have The Candied Apple Next Year
There are some foods that are just going to remain “off the table” as options until you have your braces taken off. Enjoy the holidays free of trauma by skipping anything extremely hard, very sticky, or too chewy, so your orthodontic treatment stays in place. (Remember, it will be over very soon!).
