When a tooth becomes damaged or develops a serious cavity or infection, you may need more than a filling. With a crown, we can restore your tooth and offer lifelike results. In addition to a full one, we can also offer partial crowns, also known as inlays and onlays. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about repairing smiles with our custom dental crowns.
When You Need a Restoration
When does a tooth need to receive a dental restoration? We may recommend one if a tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken. We could place one for teeth with decay too advanced for a filling, or for patients receiving a root canal for an infected tooth. Placement could address misshapen teeth, improving bite balance, and even boost your chewing capabilities. Restorations can also aid in replacing missing teeth, as they can support a dental bridge or even restore a single tooth dental implant. But which one do you need, a full crown or an inlay or onlay?
Placing a Full Crown
If you need a full crown, which caps the tooth and covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, then we will start by numbing the tooth. Once we do, our team will next remove structure to make room for the restoration. We then take detailed digital images and measurements of the tooth from multiple angles, and use this in a lab setting to design and craft your restoration. When possible, we opt for materials like porcelain, zirconia, or porcelain-fused-to-metal, so you have one that can be color matched to blend with your smile. We then place it with a powerful bonding agent!
Inlays and Onlays
If you have an injury or cavities too severe for a filling, but not serious enough that a full crown is needed, then you could benefit from partial crowns, also known as inlays and onlays. Made from materials like porcelain, these can be shaded to blend with your smile. The inlay fits in between the cusps on top of the tooth, while the onlay fits over the cusps.
