Dental misalignment not only leads to issues with the appearance of your smile, but this could also impact your oral health and bite function. To improve the health and beauty of your smile, you need orthodontic treatment. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team looks at the benefits of traditional braces.

The Causes and Dangers of Dental Misalignment

Why do we end up with dental misalignment? This could be due to issues like thumb sucking in childhood, or the premature loss of your baby teeth. Injury to the face or jaw, or complications with the growth of your jaw and eruption of the teeth could be a factor too. Losing teeth in the teen and adult year can also alter your alignment, as can the arrival of your wisdom teeth. When you have an uneven smile, this could mean daily maintenance is difficult and the risk of cavities and gum disease are much higher. Dental misalignment could also increase the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding) and leave patients feeling self-conscious about their appearance. But we can help with traditional braces.

Traditional Braces

With traditional braces, our team will connect metal brackets to the front facing sides of each tooth. One these are in place; we will connect a portion of an arch wire to the with bands. Once this is complete, when you visit our office, we will adjust tension in the wire to shift the teeth closer and closer to their optimal positions. Total treatment could take about two years, as we often use metal braces to take on more severe cases of misalignment.

Esthetic Braces

We also have esthetic braces for a more attractive appearance. As with traditional braces, there will be brackets on each tooth connected with an arch wire and a band. But instead of stainless steel, these will be made from clear or gold materials to make them less visible or to make them more attractive than traditional options. The treatment is just as effective, but people may feel more confident with these options. If you have any questions about traditional braces, then contact our team today to learn more.
