If we see a tooth that is damaged, decayed, or infected, then we could offer treatment with a dental filling or even a custom dental crown. But what if the issue is too severe for restorative treatment? In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we can help protect your smile with a tooth extraction.
When a Smile Needs a Tooth Extraction
When should a tooth be extracted from your smile? As we mentioned above, when a case of tooth decay, injury, or infection is too severe to be treated with a traditional dental restoration, removal could be needed to avoid major complications and discomfort. Our team could also remove a tooth to aid in orthodontic treatment, make room for a dental prosthetic, or to take out teeth loosened by gum disease. We could also remove wisdom teeth before they erupt, so you avoid painful impactions, infection, and the risk of damaged teeth and misalignment.
Ensuring the Comfort of Your Experience
Our team knows you may feel a little nervous at the prospect of oral surgery, but remember that tooth extraction is a common procedure, and one that could be completed in as little as a half hour! We also plan the treatment in detail with digital x-rays taken of your smile, so we can monitor the tooth and avoid contact with blood vessels, nerve tissues, and sinus cavities. We will also offer a local anesthesia to the area to numb it, and we can even have sedation to help patients with dental anxiety and special needs enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, often with no memory of the procedure at all!
The Tooth Extraction Process
Once we have planned the procedure in detail and properly numbed and sedated you, we will gently remove the tooth in question with a pair of forceps. The process could take as little as a half hour, but more complex cases could require more time. Once we remove the tooth, we will suture the area closed and provide instructions and medications to aid in the healing process. You may return to your normal routine in as little as 24 hours!
