When to See Our Team for a Diagnosis
Experts recommend an initial orthodontic exam for kids starting as young as age seven. At this point in time, kids have a mix of primary and permanent teeth, so we can better gauge the risk to their alignment and bite balance. We will look at their smiles with advanced imaging technology to plan treatment and choose the most appropriate orthodontic options to help little smiles. For many, we can start the first phase of their treatment with our interceptive orthodontics.
Phase One Orthodontic Treatment
The first phase of treatment is mainly about guiding the growth of the smile to prevent alignment concerns from growing more severe, and to limit how much time they will need to wear braces or aligners as teens. Our team could use custom retainers, fixed or removable, to help guide the growth of the smile. If baby teeth fall out too soon, we could add a space maintainer to help ensure the surrounding teeth don’t shift, so the permanent tooth can erupt without complication, protecting your child’s alignment.
Continuing Care in the Teen Years
The first phase can start as early as age seven, but what about phase two? For the next portion, we will wait until the permanent teeth have erupted and properly calcified. We then offer treatment with options like traditional braces or Invisalign® aligners.
