From chipped to knocked-out teeth, dental emergencies can lead to discomfort and without treatment, a risk of worsening pain and even tooth loss. Which is why we want to make sure you know what to do when faced with one! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about addressing dental emergencies.
Common Examples of Dental Emergencies
What is a dental emergency? This refers to any injuries or pain in the teeth and gums. If the issue is potentially life threatening, then please call 911 right away or proceed to the nearest emergency room. Otherwise, give our team a call. If you call during our normal business hours, we will try to see you same-day if possible. If you call outside our normal business hours, then leave a message and we will reach out with possible appointment times.
Common examples include cracked or chipped teeth, sudden toothaches or objects caught between the teeth, or issues with teeth being knocked loose or out completely. You should also see us right away if a restoration is damaged or missing, or if you have damaged orthodontics or prosthetics.
Easing Your Initial Discomfort
You can take a few steps to help ease your initial discomfort. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and rinse with warm water. If an object is caught between the teeth, try to dislodge it with floss, but don’t use anything else, as you risk damage to your smile. If a tooth is damaged, try to bring any pieces you can recover. If you can’t, don’t worry, we can still restore the tooth. Control any bleeding with a bit of cloth or gauze, and a cold compress could or even facial swelling. If a tooth is knocked out, then only pick it up by the crown, never touch the root. You can place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and bring it with you to the office.
Repairing Your Tooth
Our team will examine your smile carefully and ask about your injury. We can then offer repair, sometimes in one visit with dental bonding. Our team can also offer custom dental crowns. If you have any questions, give us a call!
