woodcrest oral hygiene

We want to see you every six months for a checkup and cleaning to keep your smile healthy and beautiful. But in between these visits, you need to care for your smile from home! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how to improve your oral hygiene habits at home with better brushing and flossing, so you can keep cavities and gum disease at bay.

Plaque and Tartar

Over time, harmful oral bacteria will break down and consume the particles of sugar and starch left behind by the foods and drinks we consume. As this occurs, oral acidity rises and the teeth are coated in a bacterial byproduct known as plaque. This sticky layer cannot be removed with brushing and flossing, and can harden with time into tartar. The buildup can weaken and erode the outer enamel to cause tooth decay. The same buildup can irritate and inflame the gums to cause gingivitis and gum disease. The risk of bad breath and teeth stains are higher too. But with good oral hygiene habits, you can limit the ability for the buildup to occur!

Brushing and Flossing

To safeguard your smile from home, you need to start each day by brushing for two minutes when you wake up, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. You should do the same before going to bed. You also need to floss in between your teeth each evening too. You run the floss tape or string up and down each side of every tooth, dipping below the gum line when you do. This helps dislodge and remove what a toothbrush alone cannot reach. You can also help you smile by cutting back on the amount of sugar and starch in your diet too.

Checkups and Cleanings

We want to see you every six months, so we can examine your smile for signs and trouble and also conduct a cleaning, in which we remove the plague and tartar that has accumulated on your teeth, so you can enjoy healthy and strong gums and teeth. If you have any questions about how our team will boost your overall oral hygiene, then contact our office today to learn more and schedule your next visit.
