If you have dental discoloration, you could feel embarrassed about your appearance. But we have options to help using cosmetic dentistry, removing or even masking your unsightly teeth stains. In today’s blog, your team at Riverside Dental Group talks about solutions to smile discoloration with teeth whitening and more!
Types of Teeth Stains
There are essentially two different types of tooth stain. The most common is extrinsic, and forms on the outer surface of the teeth. These could be caused by the foods and drinks we consume, and our oral hygiene habits. The less common but more severe type is intrinsic, which forms beneath the outer enamel, often due to injury, fluorosis, or exposure to certain medications at a young age. Our team will examine your smile to assess the cause and type of discoloration, and then recommend the best solution for you, choosing from teeth whitening and even custom veneers.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening can break up and lift stains from your teeth, and we have two different options to choose from. With our in-office option, we will use a combination of a special gel and a light to break up stains in as little as one to two hours total. If you have a job interview, first date, or special events, this could offer fast results.
We also have a take-home whitening kit, which can take on more severe teeth stains. With this option, we will create a set of custom plastic trays, which you take home along with multiple plastic syringes of bleaching gel. Once at home, each day you add gel to the trays and wear them for a set amount of time, usually about an hour a day, and you could see a smile up to eight shades brighter in one week.
Bonding and Veneers
If you have intrinsic teeth stains, we could cover these up! With bonding, we use the same compost resin as our tooth-colored fillings to cover up discoloration. With veneers, we place a thin restoration on the surface of your teeth. These options also address other issues too, such as minor damage or gaps between the teeth.
