Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, and rarely during convenient times. When they occur, you need to not only see our team for treatment, but need to take action to protect your smile from pain and complications. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how to respond to common dental emergencies.
Common Examples of Dental Emergencies
Basically, if you sustain any damage to your smile or experience discomfort, then you should see us for emergency dentistry. If the issue is potentially life threatening, then you should call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room. Otherwise, call our team right away! If the issue occurs during our normal operating hours, then we will try to see you same-day if possible. If this happens outside of our normal business hours, then call our office and leave a message. A member of our team will reach out to you with possible appointment times, so we can help protect and repair your smile!
Examples of dental emergencies include a tooth that is cracked, chipped, or broke. A loose tooth or one that is knocked-out completely is also a cause for concern. Let us know if you experience sudden pain in a tooth, or if you have something caught between the teeth or along the gum line that floss alone cannot remove. You should also contact us if you have a restoration that is damaged or missing, compromised prosthetics, or damaged orthodontics.
Tips for Easing Your Pain
After you call our team, you can take actions to help ease overall discomfort. For example, you should take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort. If there is bleeding, then stem it with a bit of cloth or gauze. You can also apply a cold compress to the side of your face to control swelling. If a tooth is broken or chipped, then try to recover any pieces and bring them with you. If you can’t recover any pieces, don’t worry, we can still repair your tooth. If a tooth is knocked out, then pick it up and place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water, and bring it with you. When you pick it up, only touch the crown, not the root. If a restoration, prosthetic, or orthodontic appliance is compromised, bring any portions of it you can with you.
