moreno valley pediatric dentistry

Children need routine dental care too! In addition to our checkups and cleanings, we can offer unique treatments to help lower the risk of tooth decay! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about helping kids with pediatric dentistry.

Scheduling Your Child’s First Visit

Like you, children of all ages need to see the dentist for a checkup and cleaning visit every six months. Your child’s first appointment, a simple wellness visit with a knee-to-knee exam, should happen around age one, once the first baby tooth erupts. At age two, kids need to start undergoing an exam every six months. Our team can then monitor the smile as it grows and changes, looking for signs of trouble and taking action to protect your children. We will look for issues like cavities and gingivitis. We even have phase one orthodontics to help ease misalignment in children as young as age seven. In the same visit, we will also clean the teeth to remove all plaque and tartar buildup, which is key to lowering the risk of issues like tooth decay and gingivitis.

Treatments to Help Prevent Cavities

Our team knows that kids are inundated with sugar, especially during the summer break. But we can help lower the risk of tooth decay! For example, during each checkup visit we can apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth that strengthens the outer enamel and makes the onset of cavities less likely. We also know that kids often have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss, which allow cavities to form in between the molars. But with dental sealants, we can apply an acrylic layer to the rear teeth so food and drink particles cannot be trapped there. Applying the sealants only takes seconds, and they can stay in place for up to ten years! With both options, kids need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour as the material properly cures.

Discussing Better Oral Hygiene Habits

We also want your kids to take better care of their smiles at home. We can talk to them about proper brushing and flossing, and the need to cut back on the sugar and starch in their diets. Our team is happy to discuss better snack options too!
