Taking care of your smile each day can help control harmful plaque and tartar buildup, protecting smiles of all ages from the risk of tooth decay and gingivitis. From brushing and flossing to healthier snack options, steps can be taken to safeguard smiles! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how you can protect smiles against issues that threaten teeth and gums.
Brushing Your Teeth
You have heard this your whole life, but it is true! You should brush your teeth daily to help remove stray food and drink particles, which limits the severity of plaque buildup and helps protect your teeth and gums from issues like tooth decay and gingivitis. We recommend doing so in the morning when you wake up and then again before going to bed each night. Each session should take two minutes, and we recommend a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid inadvertent damage to gums or enamel. We also urge you to pick up a toothpaste with fluoride to help strengthen the outer enamel as you clean your teeth. If you have kids, make sure they also brush for the same amount of time, as smiles of all ages could be vulnerable to issues like tooth decay.
Flossing Nightly
Even more important than brushing is flossing, and often people skip this crucial step for protecting smiles against the onset of cavities, gingivitis, and even gum disease. The goal of flossing is to remove the bits of food and drink particles caught between your teeth or along the gum line, beyond the reach of your toothbrush. As soon as there are teeth sitting next to one another, kids also need to floss. You can use a pick, string, or tape, just be sure you clean up and down each side of every tooth, and dip beneath the gum line too.
Reducing Sugar Consumption
When you have a diet high in sugar and starch, this leaves behind particles for bacteria to consume, a process that creates the plaque buildup that can weaken enamel and inflame the gums, creating a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Instead, choose fresh veggies and fruits, whole grain breads, dairy products, low-fat yogurts, and other items high in vitamin C and D.
