We offer a full range of orthodontic treatment options, from braces to Invisalign® aligners. With retainers, we can help kids, teens, and adults on their journey to an even smile. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we provide custom treatment for uneven smiles with our fixed and removable retainers.
A Look at Our Orthodontic Appliances
A retainer is an orthodontic appliance that is worn by our patients. The device could be fixed in place, meaning you cannot remove it, or removable, so you can take it out to clean and soak as needed. The traditional Hawley options are made from stainless-steel wires and acrylic. We also have less noticeable options made from clear acrylic materials. The permanent option will be connected to the teeth to keep it in place. When worn, these can help shift the teeth as needed to correct misalignment, or to keep teeth in current alignment. Some could even be used to improve the growth of the bite as needed!
Before or After Braces?
The answer is both, actually. Anyone who wears braces will need a retainer afterward. To keep your teeth in their new positions, the jawbone needs to reform around their new positions to secure them. This takes time, so the appliance can help prevent your teeth from shifting back to their previous positions, so your hard-earned new results remain intact. Whether you are a teen or adult, if you have completed your braces, you will need one.
What about before? For our phase one orthodontics, which we use to begin treatment for kids as young as age seven, we can create retainers designed to help guide the growth of the bite to limit misalignment severity, so kids need less time with braces or aligners in their teen years. If kids or adults have very minor cases of misalignment, then a retainer may be the only option necessary to correct misalignment.
Regardless of the reason you are receiving one, we will custom-fit the appliance by taking detailed digital images of your bite, as well as measurements to create a 3D impression, one far more accurate than a traditional physical mold. This means treatment with greater precision and accuracy, so you or your child can enjoy optimal results!
