woodcrest wisdom tooth extraction

As people approach their teens and early adulthood, up to four new teeth could erupt in the rear of the mouth. Known as wisdom teeth, these third molars could lead to major issues with the appearance and function of your smile! But we can help. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we extract wisdom teeth before they erupt.

The Dangers of Your Wisdom Teeth

What happens when these wisdom teeth arrive? In most cases, there simply isn’t enough room for them to erupt, which means up to four new teeth are forced into your smile. This could create dental misalignment, which itself raises the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, while also altering your smile in negative ways. There could also only be room for partial erupt, creating a painful dental impaction. Wisdom teeth are also linked to higher risks of tooth decay, infection, and damaged teeth. Which is why we want to remove them before they even erupt if possible.

Planning the Tooth Extraction Process

To start the process, we want to see the exact position of these teeth in your smile. With digital x-rays, we can obtain clear images and identify their exact position in the jaw. We can then plan a tooth extraction that avoids contact with nerve tissues, blood vessels, and sinus cavities. We also take steps to help ensure you feel comfortable throughout the process. We can numb the area directly with a local anesthetic, and we also offer dental sedation. With sedation, we can choose from options like nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and even IV sedation, depending on your age, anxiety levels, and other factors. You stay comfortable and relaxed, and have little to no memory of the procedure at all.

Removing Your Third Molars

Once you are sedated and ready, we will open the gums above these teeth so that we can access and remove them with a pair of forceps. We then suture the area closed and a clot will form to aid in the healing process. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions for how to eat and care for the area to ensure the sites heal quickly and comfortably, and you can return to your normal routine in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
