Have you ever heard of wisdom teeth? Also known as the third molars, these are additional teeth that arrive in the back of your mouth as you approach adulthood. Without removal, they could lead to a number of negative changes to your smile. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we address the threat of wisdom tooth eruption!
The Risks Posed by Third Molars
Let’s talk about the dangers posed by the presence of wisdom teeth. Typically, one tooth erupts at the end of each arch on the upper and lower portions of your smile. Some could have fewer erupt, some could have none at all. When you or a family member is approaching adulthood, then schedule an exam so we can look at the smile and assess the risks posed for your smile. If there is one, then we will gently remove these teeth before they erupt to protect the health, function, and appearance of your smile.
Otherwise, since there is simply no room for these teeth, they can cause teeth to shift to create misalignment, possibly undoing recent orthodontic progress! They may also only partially erupt, causing a painful impaction that is also linked to damaged teeth and infection.
Planning Their Removal
To plan their removal, we will examine the smile with digital x-rays, so we can assess their exact position in your bite. We then plan the extraction, so we can open the gums above them and access and remove these teeth with precision. This ensures we don’t encounter nerve tissues, blood vessels, or sinus cavities in the process. We also take steps to ensure you remain comfortable. For example, our team will numb the teeth with a local anesthesia and provide deep sedation, such as oral conscious sedation or IV, to help you enter a deep state of calm with no memory of the process at all. Even those with special needs or a fear of the dentist will be able to undergo care with comfort.
The Extraction Process
As we touched on above, we will gently open the gums above the teeth to access them. We then gently loosen and extract them with a pair of forceps. We will suture the area closed and may place medication at the site. We then send you home with detailed aftercare instructions and prescriptions for medications to ensure you stay comfortable while a clot forms and the area heals quickly, so you can return to your normal routine after a day or two.
