woodcrest pediatric dentistryTo help protect smiles of all ages, including babies, toddlers, and teens, we can offer pediatric dentistry. These treatments can help protect kids from cavities and help them better understand how to care for their smiles. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about our approach to pediatric dentistry.

When to Bring Kids in for An Exam

How often should kids see the dentist? When should the first checkup happen? We recommend an initial wellness visit at around age one, after the first baby tooth erupts. one your little one is two, we recommend routine checkups and cleanings every six months. We can monitor the smile and watch for issues that could threaten their oral health. This also helps them become accustomed to seeing the dentist, so they avoid dental anxiety later in life, and may gain a better understanding of their own oral health and the importance of daily care and routine visits to the dentist.

The Checkup and Cleaning Process

When kids sit down for an exam, we will talk to them about their oral hygiene habits, discuss what to expect, and answer any questions they have so they feel relaxed and comfortable. Every child should have a positive experience when they see the dentist! With the exam, we use advanced digital imaging technology that uses less radiation to conduct an examination with precision and accuracy, including issues like tooth decay, developing misalignment, and other factors that could upset their oral health.

We also clean the teeth, a process that enables us to completely remove all plaque and tartar from the teeth, lowering the risk of poor oral health and protecting their smiles while also keeping them bright!

Treatments to Prevent Cavities

As part of the regular checkup appointment, we will also apply fluoride to the teeth that helps keep the outer enamel strong and the risk of tooth decay much lower. This takes seconds, and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour afterward. We can also coat the rear teeth, which kids often have trouble reaching when they brush and floss, in dental sealants, which again fights the risk of cavities, but for years to come instead of just months!
