If you have pain in a tooth, this could be due to a cavity or even the early stages of an infection. You need treatment to address the source of the pain and help prevent complications like tooth loss! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about how we ease dental pain with a root canal procedure!
The Link Between Tooth Pain and Infection
A tooth could develop an infected tooth if a cavity remains untreated or an injury occurs, such as breakage or a fracture, that exposes sensitive inner tissue to bacteria. When infected, this could be a source of serious discomfort. For example, you have severe toothaches or tooth sensitivity, including pain when you bite down or chew. You could also have swelling near the tooth or even a poor-tasting discharge from it. You may also experience pain in the face and jaw, or a headache or fever. Root canal treatment is necessary to not only stop the discomfort, but also to protect your smile from tooth loss and spreading infection!
Planning Treatment and Ensuring Your Comfort
Our team will first examine your tooth with a digital x-ray so we can see inside and assess the presence of the infection, as well as the severity. If you need a root canal, then we will plan the process in detail. And take steps to ensure your comfort, even if you have anxiety or special needs that would otherwise complicate treatment. We not only numb the area directly with a local anesthetic, but we could also discuss nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, or even IV sedation to help you enter a deep state of calm with little to no memory of the procedure at all! Your experience in our office should be a positive one from beginning to the end.
The Root Canal Procedure
When we have planned the process and properly numbed you, we will open the tooth so we can take out the interior tissues, reding the infection completely. We then clean the inside of the tooth thoroughly and add a special filling to the interior. The last step is to actually cap the tooth with a crown, so it looks natural and has a durable layer of protection to prevent infection or further decay/infection.
