Interceptive orthodontics, also known as phase one treatment, is how we start orthodontic treatment for smiles as young as age seven. This can help expand smiles and guide growth to limit misalignment! In today’s blog, Riverside Dental Group talks about how we help little smiles with phase one orthodontics.
The Need for Orthodontics in the Early Years
Once your child reaches age seven, they will have a mixture of baby teeth and permanent ones, and we can better assess risks to their alignment. Which means we have a chance to take action and help guide smile growth to limit misalignment, and hopefully, limit the amount of time they may need braces or aligners in the teen years! Our team will start with a detailed examination of the teeth with digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, so we can assess the state of your little one’s smile and plan treatment.
Retainers, Space Maintainers, and More
Our team could recommend retainers for some children, as these oral appliances can be used to help guide smile growth and limit misalignment. We can offer removable or fixed options, and fixed options are usually better for kids as this limits the risk of losing the appliance! If they lose baby teeth early, this could cause teeth to drift and impact how permanent teeth arrive, causing misalignment. But with a space maintainer, we can offer an oral appliance that keeps the area open so permanent teeth can erupt without complications!
We can also offer expanders to help ensure the smile can accommodate their teeth and off a more even smile. Once the permanent teeth erupt and their surfaces properly calcify, we can move forward with the second phase of treatment. This happens in their teen years, and could include metal braces or more severe misalignment, or Invisalign® aligners for more minor ones. If you have any questions about how we plan and implement orthodontic treatment for children, or about our phase one options in particular, then contact our team today to learn more. We are ready to start your child’s journey to an even smile!
