For kids in their late teens and adults in their late 20s, up to four new teeth could erupt. When this happens, major oral health complications could erupt. But to protect your smile and preserve your alignment, we can remove them before they arrive. In today’s blog, Riverside Dental Group talks about how we prevent issues with wisdom tooth extraction.
The Arrival of Your Third Molars
These additional molars tend to arrive in our late teens and early 20s. When they do, there is barely room in your smile to accommodate them, so their arrival causes serious problems. For example, they could crowd your teeth to create misalignment, which itself alters your smile’s appearance and increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. They could damage nearby teeth, creating infections. They may also only partially erupt, creating a painful complication. To avoid these complications and keep your smile intact, we could remove them before they erupt with a tooth extraction.
Planning Removal
To begin the process, we will take digital x-rays of your bite to identify the portion of these teeth and plan removal in detail, which ensures we avoid any contact with blood vessels, nerve tissues, or sinus cavities. We will numb the area with a local anesthesia and then use sedation to help ensure you stay comfortable and relaxed throughout, often with no memory of the procedure. Once you are prepared and ready, we will remove the wisdom teeth.
The Extraction and Recovery Process
We open the gums above them to access these teeth, and then use a pair of forceps to take them out completely. We will suture the area closed and send you home with detailed aftercare instructions, and possibly prescriptions for medications to aid in the healing process. We want a clot to form and help it heal quickly, so you can return to your normal routine in a day or two. Be sure you follow our instructions to prevent the clot from dislodging! We will also remove the sutures in a follow-up visit.
