woodcrest children's orthodonticsWhen you think about orthodontic treatments, you probably assume this is only for teens and adults. But if your child begins to exhibit uneven teeth, we could help, and starting as young as age seven. In today’s blog, your team at Riverside Dental Group talks about how we help little smiles with phase one treatment, using our custom interceptive orthodontics.

Starting Phase One Orthodontics

Our team can start the first phase of orthodontic treatment for kids as young as age seven. We want there to be a mix of permanent and baby teeth to ensure we can better assess the risk of misalignment. Our team will examine the smile thoroughly with digital x-rays and other imaging systems, ensuring a diagnosis with precision and accuracy. From there, we can better understand the source and risks of their alignment concerns, and plan treatment to help their smiles. With this phase, we hope to guide the smile and limit the severity of alignment, lowering the amount of time they will need braces and aligners as teens.

Interceptive Orthodontic Options

For many, we could create a retainer. This oral appliance is fixed in place or removable, and once in place will help guide the growth of the smile to limit alignment issues. We always take a custom approach to ensure optimal fit. If your child has lost a baby tooth early, we could prevent teeth from shifting and permanent teeth from erupting improperly with a space maintainer. This is attached to the teeth on each side of the gap, keeping them in place and allowing the place to remain open and free for permanent teeth to erupt and fill.

Continuing Care

The second phase of treatment will begin when your child is a teen, and all permanent teeth have erupted and their surfaces have properly calcified. We can then offer traditional or esthetic braces, or even Invisalign® aligners, to help finish the process of straightening their smiles.
