When a tooth sustains damage or develops decay too severe for a filling, we could cap it with a crown. But what if the issues are too severe for options like fillings, but not advanced enough that a full restoration is necessary? In these situations, your Riverside Dental Group team may recommend either an inlay or onlay to return your tooth to full function, health, and beauty.
Traditional Dental Crowns
As we mentioned in our previous blog, a dental crown is a full restoration that caps the tooth and covers the structure from the gum line up. Which means we can take on a host of serious cosmetic and restorative oral health concerns. However, this does require removing a large amount of outer structure to make room for the restoration. In situations like decay or injury where the damage doesn’t require us removing such a large amount from the tooth, our team can help with partial crowns, also known as inlays and onlays.
Inlays and Onlays
The inlays are a small ceramic restoration that will fit in between the cusps on top of your tooth. The onlays are a bit larger and fit over the cusps, but still don’t require the loss of structure that a full crown would necessitate.
Creating Custom Porcelain Restorations
To begin, we will numb your tooth so you are comfortable as we remove decay and structure from between the cusps, which is down for an inlay. For an onlay, we may need to remove a layer from the top of the tooth. Our team will then take detailed images and measurements of the prepped tooth, which we use in our dental lab to design and fabricate the restoration from ceramic. The material is very strong and can handle daily bite forces and pressures with ease. The material can also be color-matched to blend with your tooth and offer a more natural appearance. Once we attach it with a powerful bonding agent, this can stay in place for years to come, protecting your tooth.
If you have any questions about our partial crowns, or if you have an aching or damaged tooth, then contact our team right away to discuss possible treatment options, including inlays and onlays.
