When you have plaque and tartar buildup accumulating on your smile, you need help to prevent this from becoming tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque, but a cleaning will completely remove these layers! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about protecting smiles with a dental cleaning.

The Impact of Plaque and Tartar

How does plaque and tartar coat your smile and cause trouble for your oral health? Over time, harmful oral bacteria will break down and consume the particles of sugar and starch left behind by the foods and drinks we consume. When this happens, the oral acidity levels in our mouth will rise. A sticky bacterial byproduct known as plaque will coat the teeth, and harden into tartar with time. These layers cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone.

The layers can weaken and erode tooth enamel to make the onset of cavities more likely. The same layers also irritate and inflame the gums, which creates gingivitis and could even lead to gum disease. Bad breath is more likely, as are unsightly teeth stains. To brighten your smile and protect the overall health and function of your teeth and gums, you need a visit every six months to control harmful buildup!

The Dental Cleaning

The dental cleaning process involves our team using an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to break up and remove buildup from the surfaces of the teeth. We may use a manual pick to take on stubborn portions of tartar. Our team then polishes the teeth, which not only brightens them, but also makes it more difficult for plaque and tartar to accumulate in between your routine six month appointments.

Scaling and Root Planing

In addition to a traditional cleaning every six months, we can also offer a deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, if you have the warning signs of gum disease. This can make the issue manageable with a traditional one every three to four months. The procedure involves removing plaque and tartar from both the teeth and the roots, and is more involved and may require more than one visit!
