moreno valley tooth extraction

As we have covered in previous blogs, we often use restorations like dental crowns to address damaged teeth and prevent the risk of tooth loss. But sometimes, issues arise too severe to be addressed with a restoration. Instead, saving the teeth from painful complications means the need for removal. In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about tooth extraction.

The Reasons to Extract a Tooth

Why do we remove a tooth instead of trying to save it? As mentioned above, when one develops a cavity or infection too severe to be treated with a root canal, extraction is the only one to avoid infection from spreading to other teeth or moving into the jawbone itself. We could remove a tooth that is too damaged to be repaired with a crown for the same reason. This prevents major discomfort and complications down the road.

Our team could also take out teeth to make room for orthodontic treatment, or conduct extractions to pave the way for a set of dentures. For some, tooth removal could help remove overall bite balance and chewing function. In many cases, we want to remove wisdom teeth before they erupt and threaten the stability of the smile, sparing major issues with the health, function, and appearance of the smile instantly.

Ensuring the Tooth Removal is Comfortable

We know that the idea of tooth extraction could be an uncomfortable one for our patients, which is why we take measures to ensure they stay comfortable throughout the visit. For example, we will plan the process in detail to ensure we avoid any contact with nerve tissues, sinus cavities, or blood vessels. We do this by gathering detailed digital x-rays of the tooth.

We also administer a local anesthetic to the area to numb it, and for patients with anxiety or special needs, or those undergoing a more extensive tooth removal, we could offer sedation to help them enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, often with little to no memory of the procedure at all.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Once we have planned the procedure, we then gently extract the tooth with a pair of forceps. For some, this could take as little as a half hour!
