Does your small child have poor alignment? For kids with crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth, we could start treatment at a young age to help guide their smiles! In today’s blog, your Riverside Dental Group team talks about helping little smiles with our Phase One Orthodontics.
The Causes of Dental Misalignment in Little Smiles
How does a child develop an uneven smile? For some, issues with the size of the jaw or the position of oral structures could impact how baby teeth erupt, leading to increased risks or proper alignment. If they lose baby teeth too soon due to injury or issues like cavities or infections, then this could allow teeth to drift from position and alter how permanent ones arrive, which leads to uneven smiles. Our team will examine your child’s smile to assess the cause and severity of the alignment concerns, so we can plan treatment with precision and start your little one on the road to a straighter smile!
Starting Care with Phase One Orthodontics
For kids as young as age seven, we can offer Phase One Orthodontics, which use items like retainers and space maintainers to help ease the impact of misalignment. These options will be custom-fitted to your child’s smile to ensure treatment with precision, and to help guide the growth of the jaw and help limit the severity of misalignment.
With a retainer, we can use a removable or permanent appliance to help guide jaw and bite growth, limiting how severe misalignment will be in the teen years. With space maintainers, we can offer an appliance that helps keep the areas where a tooth has been lost open, so shifting teeth don’t change how the teeth erupt.
Treatment with Braces and Invisalign®
What comes after Phase One Orthodontics? When your children reach the teen years, we can start the next phase. The permanent teeth all need to erupt and their surfaces properly calcify before we can begin. At this stage, we can use braces or even Invisalign® aligners to complete shifting the teeth and ensure an even smile. We can then discuss using retainers to ensure the teeth stay in place as the jawbone reforms around the new positions, so your child’s smile remains even for years to come!
