temecula periodontic therapyTaking care of your gums is just as important as caring for your teeth. Which is why we offer treatment to help reverse gingivitis and/or manage periodontal disease! In today’s blog, the team at Riverside Dental Group talks about safeguarding smiles with periodontic dentistry, so you avoid discomfort and the risk of tooth loss.

The Risk of Periodontal Disease and Tooth Loss

When you develop periodontal disease, whether due to poor oral hygiene habits or possibly inflammatory illnesses like diabetes, this could lead to sore, red, bleeding, and receding gums, altering the appearance of your smile and causing discomfort. Over time however, the disease could reach a stage known as periodontitis, which is linked to adult tooth loss. This stage severs the tissues between the teeth and gums, and is in fact the number one cause of missing teeth in adults! But we can help manage it to ensure your smile stays intact and you avoid soreness and bleeding in the future. A scaling and root planing could help ensure the issue is manageable with a preventive approach at home and in our office.

A Scaling and Root Planing

Also known as a periodontal cleaning, a scaling and root planing is more involved than a traditional cleaning. We may in fact numb your smile before we begin! With an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual pick, we will gently and thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from the teeth and the exposed portions of the roots. We also destroy pockets of bacteria from beneath the gums. The procedure could take one visit or as many as four, it all depends on the severity of your buildup. We then polish the teeth to help limit the ability for serious buildup to occur before we see you again. Following this procedure, we can begin managing your gum health with routine visits.

Managing Your Poor Periodontal Health

Traditionally, a regular dental cleaning is recommended every six months, but if you have periodontal disease, we may instead suggest one every three to four months to control inflammation and keep your gums healthy and intact. We can also discuss better homecare habits and meal options to better protect your smile, and will advise you to avoid tobacco products entirely.
