What if you have a child with minor misalignment that needs attention, or what if you have stopped wearing braces, but need to keep smiles even as your jawbone reforms? In situations like these, you could benefit from an orthodontic appliance! In today’s blog, your team at Riverside Dental Group talks about our custom retainers. We want to help patients of all ages on their journey to an even smile!
The Need for an Orthodontic Appliance
When do we prescribe a retainer? For adults, this could be used to correct very minor cases of misalignment. If an adult patient has recently completed treatment with braces, then a retainer could be used to help ensure the teeth stay even as the jawbone finishes reforming around the new positions of the smile. For children, this could be part of the interceptive orthodontic process, in which we start treatment as young as age seven to help guide the growth of the smile and limit the severity of misalignment, so they need less time with braces or aligners as teens.
Creating and Securing Your Retainers
To create and custom-fit them, we will take detailed images of your bite. Intraoral cameras can take images of the surfaces of the smile, and digital x-rays and assess the position of the tooth roots and the jawbone. With this information, we can custom fit the appliance to ensure it fits poorly and provides treatment with precision. These can be to be fixed in place, or they can be removeable. For kids, we may recommend fixed to ensure the retainer is not lost. Our team will discuss how to care for your new orthodontic appliances, and how to care for your smile as a whole to lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Continuing Care as Needed
For kids and teens, following the initial retainer treatment we may then move on to the next phase of treatment, which could include braces or possibly Invisalign® aligners.
