TMJ Disorder
TMJ disorder is an issue that develops when the joints connecting your jaw and skull become strained, which upsets bite balance and even complicates how you open and close your mouth! Common causes include injury to the face or jaw, tooth loss, misalignment, or issues with the growth of your jaw or eruption of your teeth. Wisdom tooth eruption could be a factor too! Bruxism
Untreated TMJ disorder could lead to bruxism, and vice-versa. Bruxism refers to chronic teeth grinding, which can wear down teeth to make them appear shorter, and crack or chip structures too, all of which leaves you vulnerable to tooth decay and infection. This shares the same causes as TMJ disorders in many cases, as well as factors like a high stress level in your daily life. Symptoms are also similar, and could include tooth sensitivity and toothaches. But this can also be addressed with a custom oral appliance!
Oral Appliance Treatment
How do we treat these two disorders with the same solution? An oral appliance is a device that will look like a mouthguard but is custom-fitted for your bite. When worn, this gently repositions your jaw to ease underlying stress and tension, easing TMD symptoms and preventing further pain. At the same time, this also places a soft barrier between the upper and lower sets of teeth, which prevents further injury to the face or jaw. The oral appliance will be easy to use, and simple to care for and maintain. This can even travel with you on vacation!
