We learn to brush our teeth as children, and the practice is usually instilled firmly. Many people are brushing their teeth as adults in the exact same way they brushed their teeth as a small child. Unfortunately, if you were not taught proper brushing procedures, all of the regularity in the world won’t equivocate the guarantee of healthy teeth and gums. Proper brushing technique can make the difference between a lifetime of fantastic oral health or years of ongoing dental issues. The Riverside dentists at Riverside Dental Group believe prevention is the key to good oral health. If you haven’t been brushing properly, now is the time to brush up on your skills.
Stop Plaque Buildup
Adults and children should brush teeth at least twice a day. The sooner you clean your teeth after eating, the less time plaque has to accumulate, with one exception. Plaque is a thin, sticky film that is formed by the combination of germs, acid, and food debris. If you allow plaque to remain on your teeth, it demineralizes tooth structure allowing for cavities. However, if you eat or drink something acidic, you should wait for 30 minutes to brush so that your tooth enamel doesn’t become scratched and damaged from the temporary softening of acid exposure.
Slow, Steady, Gentle, and Consistent
When you brush your teeth, try not to rush. The American Dental Association recommends 30 seconds on each quadrant, or two total minutes of brushing. Make sure that you brush inside your teeth as well as outside. Don’t neglect your gumline, and brush your tongue to combat halitosis. When you floss, do so before you brush so debris from between your teeth is cleared away. Use a soft-bristled brush to avoid irritation of oral tissues and potential tooth sensitivity. Using a hard-bristled brush or brushing too hard can damage teeth and gums.
