Sometimes it helps to have a quick overview of a subject, before moving into more detailed conversation. If you are just beginning to consider braces (or if you think there may be braces in your future!) this is a starting point for a discussion. We want you to take your time when making important decisions about your (or your children’s) teeth. During a consultation appointment, we can examine your teeth. We may use X-rays to see the underlying structure of teeth and jaw. There will be time to answer all your questions, and provide you with complete information.
Traditional Braces (Fastened onto Teeth)
Traditional braces use metal brackets that adhere to each tooth, connected by wires and flexible bands to exert pressure in the proper directions. Adjustments are made during periodic office visits, to guide the teeth into more functional and attractive positions. Traditional braces are highly visible, which makes some people self conscious. Traditional braces are excellent when teeth need significant movement.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces have the brackets bonded to the backside (the tongue side) of the teeth. Lingual braces are almost invisible on the front side of the teeth. They can be harder to place, adjust and keep clean. Lingual braces have the ability to exert significant force on the teeth, while still being almost unnoticeable in your smile.
Invisalign
Invisalign uses a custom-made progression of clear trays, worn for about 22 hours a day, to move teeth into the desired position. The alignment trays are almost unnoticeable when in place, and can be removed for eating, cleaning and on special occasions. Maintaining good oral care habits is easier with Invisalign, as patients remove the trays to brush and floss. Invisalign is best for patients with relatively minor tooth straightening needs, as the trays do not generate the same force on teeth as do traditional braces and lingual braces. If you have questions about braces or orthodontic care, please let us know. We want you to be well informed of your dental options.
